Credit Card Processing for Student Entrepreneurs

In this day and age, almost every business requires some sort of credit card merchant account processing company.  E-commerce, brick and mortar stores, wholesale, retail, home improvement contractors, restaurants, nightclubs -- the list of businesses who depend on having a merchant account to accept Visa, Process Master Card, American Express, and/or processor of discover card is seemingly endless.  Though merchant services can be costly, consumer demand necessitates the ability to process credit cards.  So many people have simply given up on carrying cash and prefer to do business with plastic instead!

When it comes to credit card processing online, offshore merchant accounts and services like PayPal can provide reasonable alternatives to traditional merchant services.  Rates will vary, but depending on the quantity of transactions being processed some companies may benefit from using an alternative service provider at least until their business is up and running at a steady pace.  Consumer comfort levels with known entities like Paypal can also help a fledgling corporation to gain the trust of their new clients.  However, these services sometimes refuse to handle certain high risk merchant accounts.

Depending on the nature of the business involved, accounts are available for both high and low risk merchants.  A lower rate merchant account is the typical classification for a business wherein the customer presents his or her credit card and signs a receipt accepting the charges.  Restaurants, grocery stores, retail shops, contracting and home maintenence services, and many others fall into this category.  A merchant account known as "high risk" , on the other hand, does not typically have the customer's credit card on hand for a card swipe.  Internet businesses such as, adult companies, travel agencies, online/internet dating merchant accounts and personals sites, and online gambling operations (which are illegal in the united states) are also categorized as high risk.  Because of the increased likelihood of charge-backs, merchant account processing service providers must charge a higher fee for their services when dealing with high risk accounts.  Depending on credit and business history, it is still possible for many business owners to secure a good rate for their risky operations.

Though it is tempting for new businesses to avoid dealing with credit card merchant account transactions altogether because of the complexity and cost of merchant services, it is important to remember that customers are counting on the ability to pay using their Visa, Master Card, or other preferred credit card.  In a truly competitive market, it is foolish to think that a business can not only survive but also thrive while rejecting their customers' credit cards.
