What do those who defend vivisection have to say?

In 1997 an American Red Cross (ARC) representative wrote that "Animals used in our laboratory work are well treated and not tortured in any way." However, it was the ARC who funded research in which genetically altered mice where allowed to develop ailments such as neural tumors, gastrointestinal tissue malformations, shaking tremors, seizures and paralysis. The Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) claimed "Our institution is accredited by the AAALAC, an independent, nonprofit organization which is the accepted standard of excellence for the humane care and use of laboratory animals." This same organization funded studies at Cornell university, one in particular where pregnant baboons had catheters implanted in their thighs and inserted into the fetuses developing inside them. Electrodes were sunk into their uteruses, and all this instrumentation was kept in the animals around the clock for the experiment.
