Hello. What you are about to read is a Rogerian Paper. A Rogerian Paper allows you to find common ground between both the reader and the writer. A Rogerian paper does not involve putting down the other person's views or opinions. But instead the writer is able to show that the other person's views are valid. The purpose of a Rogerian Paper is to reduce hostility, and establish a connection between the writer and the audience. In a Rogerian paper you should have to give up some of your own ideas to find a connection with the opposition. I think that my paper is a cross between a Rogerian Paper and a Position Paper.
If you would like to comment on this paper send me an emailI wrote this paper because when I read Mark Whiting "Here Come The Brides", it gave me a lot of concerns about the legalization of same sex marriages. My spiritual beliefs are pretty much the main reason why I chose to respond to Mark's paper. I think there can be common ground, but not the kind that Mark claims. My goal here is to reconcile my own view of same sex marriages with Marks.

What The Bible Says About Same Sex Marriages
[1] Gay marriages have been one of the hottest and controversial topics in our society. There are still problems concerning this issue of homosexuality and gay marriages. Same sex marriages are legal in Hawaii, but in all other states couples must be of the opposite sex to form a marriage. Hawaii’s decision to legalize same sex marriages is considered a milestone victory for gays and may cause a ripple affect for similar action in other states. [2] Those who support gay marriages justify their position by the concept of love. These supporters of gay marriages feel as though gay people are being deprived of their right to love. Many people believe that gay people deserve the right to love and to take that love and form a marriage. These people believe that gays want to feel justified, meaning that as a couple they should be able to define their own marriage for themselves and make their own set of rules. Supports of same-sex marriages feel as though homosexuals are being deprived of their God given right to get married. They believe that arguments against same sex marriages are unconstitutional, and they simply do not justify a ban on same sex marriages. It is not the idea of two people of the same sex getting married that frightens people so much, but it is the thought of change and the fact that the federal government will redefine marriage to allow same sex unions. When people picture the results of same sex marriages, they see images of unstable homes. Everyone would probably agree that homosexuality has changed our society, and legalizing same sex marriages is not likely to be an exception. It would be an injustice to discriminate against a person if he or she were gay. [3] I agree that homosexuals should not be discriminated against, and we should do everything in our power to make sure that they are treated equally, but I believe that same sex marriages should not be legalized. Many people believe that the word of God is the ultimate law. They believe that the bible has even greater authority over our constitutional law. Well I am one of those people. No matter what our society may legislate, the law of God is clear in stating that a marriage is not a Godly marriage if it is a same sex marriage. In the beginning God created Adam. He wanted to create a helper comparable to Adam, so one day God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam. He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh. With this rib the Lord God had taken from man he created woman (Genesis 2:18-25). When God created Adam, God created Adam’s partner to be Eve. He did not create another Adam. This means that a perfect partnership requires a male and female. The bible has made it clear that heterosexuality is the normal way that humans should bond. Heterosexuality is the way for which our bodies and emotions are designed. If God had intended the human race to be fulfilled through both heterosexual and homosexual marriage, he would have designed our bodies to allow reproduction through both means. He would have made both heterosexual and homosexual intercourse healthy and natural. But he did not. Homosexual anal intercourse carries a high risk of disease that is recognized in scripture; “Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion” (Romans 1:27). Various studies have shown that homosexual behavior makes both men and women more vulnerable to diseases (Hogg and Strathdel online source). God does not hate gay people, but he does hate the sin of homosexuality, just as he hates the sin of adultery, idolatry, fornication, and murder. By no means am I saying that the word of God says that we should hate homosexuals, or to attack them, or bash them, but on the contrary the bible says to love thy neighbor. The word of God tells us to pray for homosexuals, and share the word of God with them. A gay or homosexual person can accept Christ just as an alcoholic, a drug addict or a mass murder can. [4] Those of us who advocate same sex marriages do agree with the fact that we all want love. And we do not deny the fact that homosexuals feel deeply for their partners. When it comes to marriage love is definitely and important element, but it is not all that a marriage requires. I disagree with the idea that all you need is love when it comes to marriage. Just because an emotion is deep does not justify acting upon it. Love is a beautiful deception. Just like adultery, like the use of alcohol, or the love of money, the power of love can become terribly addictive and ultimately destructive. Many Christians fear that if same sex marriages were legalized this will give away to a multitude of addictions and corruption. Marriage is for the greater good of society, and unfortunately society often finds fulfillment in their emotions, putting them before righteous principles. [5] Many of us are truly bound by the religious ideas we have been brought up with. William Bennet is an editor of several books; he points out that recognition of gays would condone the beliefs of every major world religion (476). Christians believe that same sex marriages are contrary to the sound doctrine, the bible. According to the bible, the men of Sodom were wicked and sinful, engaging in activities that were not pleasing to God. Soon the Lord showed his displeasure and rained down fire and brimstone. God will judge any society that permits same sex marriages, just as he judged the city of Sodom and Gomorrah. Like the majority of Christians, I believe that the church of God must stand firm and never allow the union of same sex marriages. Because the word of God stands over all, when it is deliberately disobeyed it is not light but deep darkness that results. [6] If we can agree that all humans should be treated with respect, we have the basis for reconciling our positions. We should not legalize same sex marriages, but we should treat homosexual people with respect and dignity. We should not hate or threaten them just because of whom they choose to love. Just because a person is gay or homosexual does not mean that we should talk about them behind their backs, or never be-friend them, but they should be treated as any other human being. A homosexual person should not be discriminated against, but should have the same opportunities as others, but we must never allow our marriage system to be changed to fulfill ungodly acts. I know that God’s plan for sexuality is written in the bible, in Genesis 1:27, and it reads, “So God created man in his own image, in the image, of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). This can only be possible in a heterosexual union.
