How to Save Money on Auto Insurance
While you are still on your parents' policy, it is time to start looking at how you can save on auto insurance before you have to think about buying your own. In addition, even if your parents are paying the bill, they will certainly appreciate getting a break in the costs.
The good news is that you do have time to learn about the factors insurance companies use to rate policies and what you can do to assure you will be able to obtain the cheaper rate for automobile insurance. In addition to learning what the different factors used by insurance companies are before you have to start paying, you can also take advantage of this time to start putting these actions into practice. That way, when it does come time for you to pay, you will have already laid the groundwork for lower insurance rates for auto insurance like I have found.
Some of the things I have learned about in order to keep your rates low include:
- Practice safe driving so that you avoid causing any accidents. Being the cause of accidents will increase the cost of your insurance, as you will be seen as a high-risk driver.
- Follow the driving laws in your state in order to avoid a ticket and thus points on your driving record. The more points you have, the higher your auto insurance premiums will be.
- Maintain good grades in school—some companies offer good student discounts from high school through college.
- Take a defensive driving course—many insurance companies offer discounts off liability insurance for these courses.
- Avoid cars that insurance companies classify as sport or exotic models. You will need to check with your insurance company for a list of those models, as each company is different. In fact, some companies rate red cars of any model at a higher rate because their experience shows they have more accidents than other colors.
- Also if you are a smoker please avoid throwing lit cigarette butts out the window. Its not only dangerous but it is also annoying and disrepectful to the environment.
From the time you begin driving, you want to learn to drive safely and courteously. That way, you will not have to be concerned about getting a ticket or causing an accident. Of course, this is easier for some drivers than for others. At the same time, it is not impossible to accomplish if you concentrate on it.
Just because you are a teenager, it does not mean you have to drive like you own the road and everything on it in your car, truck or suv automobile. You can be a teenager and still respect the rights of others on the road, if for no other reason then to prevent having an accident and/or getting a ticket so that your insurance rates will stay as low as possible.
You also may have to make a decision on that sweet ride that you are hoping to buy, which can also result in higher insurance rates. The decision to buy it and to pay higher insurance rates or to choose something less sporty is something that you will have to decide for yourself. Perhaps that new sports car is more important to you than the price of the insurance you will have to pay. But, as long as you are aware that you are going to pay a higher rate based on the car alone, then you are at least educated about the situation.
For those who are unable to afford the extra insurance premiums, the decision whether or not to buy a sports car is answered. As long as you know the things that you can do and go into it with eyes wide open, you will be likely to make a good decision – just be sure to carefully consider what you can and cannot afford to pay.
